TREBEK
Every
once in a while, the Jeopardy
game show has a tournament of the
stars. It usually shows off the
intellectual shortcomings of the
participants and creates perfect
fodder for satire.
SNL
jumped at this opportunity with
it's own version of Celebrity
Jeopardy hosted by Will Ferrell
as Alex Trebek. Will's impression
doesn't sound much like the real
Alex, but it doesn't matter
because the purpose of the sketch
is to make fun of the
contestants. Will must play his
role as the straight man for it
to work....and work it does.
(Besides, who's going to
complain? Joe
Piscapo?)
Although
the lineup changes, one
contestant always seems to be in
the fray. He is Burt Reynolds as
played by Norm MacDonald. His
wisecracking remarks and lack of
attention or care to the game
really makes Alex upset. The more
Alex gets upset, the more
encouraged Burt is to continue.
This chemistry really worked and
ended up being the driving force
behind the sketch.
Since
Norm's departure, the Jeopardy
sketches have been a little
timid, but Ferrell fans still
hope to see Will as Alex
again...
