The
Roxbury Guys are a unique
creation carried over from Kattan
and Ferrell's days in the
Groundlings.
The
characters originated from a guy
they saw in an Santa Monica club
one night. The man wouldn't ask
anyone to dance, he just had the
look of someone who desperately
wanted to be noticed.
Will
and Chris ran with the character
and turned it into two guys who
go clubbing, always bopping to
the tune, "What is Love?" and
trying to get ladies' attention.
They usually just stand next to
the bar and wait to catch
someone's eye. When they do, they
try too hard to be a dance
partner and get turned down
immediately. Neither of them take
it personally, though, and return
to their drinks, taking suave to
a ridiculous level.
The
Roxbury guys have often been
paired up with that week's host
as a third "Guy".
Some of
the guest Roxbury Guys have
included:
Martin
Short
Sylvester Stallone (as Rocky)
Tom Hanks
Alec Baldwin
Jim Carey
& many more.
The
Guys appeared in a movie in 1998
called, "A Night at the
Roxbury."
The movie also starred Molly
Shannon, Colin Quinn, Mark
McKinney, Dan Hedaya, Chazz
Palminteri and Loni Anderson. It
was be directed by Amy Heckerling
(Clueless ) and produced
by Lorne Michaels.
Ferrell
admits that their worst fear for
the movie was how the public
would react when the Guys talked,
since they hadn't ever spoken
before.
"Either people are going to love
it or they'll say,'Why don't they
shut up?'"
Apparently,
fans liked the Roxbury jump to
the big screen as it very good
business on a very small budget.
It was made for $17 million, but
made back over to $30 million --
a surprise to many critics. It
came in 4th place to other SNL
movies, "Wayne's World", "The
Blues Bothers", and "Wayne's
World 2."
